The main engineering use of bituminous materials is in road construction. The material consists essentially of two main ingredients, aggregate and binder. In the USA the term Asphalt denotes what in the UK is known as Bitumen.

During recent times, extensive research has been carried out world-wide to improve the methods of determining both the analysis and behaviour of Asphalt mixtures in order to better understand the material's durability and performance in use.
